Madam,

I read with interest the letter from your correspondent regarding the serious problem of juvenile cyclists on Willow Way, Darley Dale (Mercury, August 7).
Unfortunately, every point made is absolutely true.
I can only advise motorists to drive along that stretch of road at below 15mph to give themselves a chance of avoiding a potentially fatal accident.

A few weeks ago a child rode from a path, by
the playground, into the side of a very slow moving vehicle.

Thankfully, in this instance, the child was unhurt. Had the vehicle been going any faster, it might have been a totally different story.
This problem was highlighted at a recent Safer Neighbourhood meeting and I would suggest that your correspondent and other drivers who are victims of these extremely dangerous 'games' contact the Darley Dale Safer Neighbourhood Police Officers on 0845 123 33 33 in order that the problem can be addressed and, hopefully, a solution found before a serious or even fatal accident happens.

In the meantime, I would hope that any parents of children riding bicycles on and around Willow Way will take notice of these letters and instruct their children in the dangers of 'playing' with cars.

Another very concerned driver
