The leader of the district council has hit back at criticism of Matlock's leisure facilities as controversy over the Lido pool closure grows.
Cllr Lewis Rose used a press release championing Derbyshire Dales' summer leisure programme to fire a verbal volley back at those that say Matlock is a poor relation in Derbyshire when it comes to leisure facilities.

Cllr Rose said: "Too often the district council, despite an amazing amount of good work carried out by its innovative and enthusiastic leisure staff, is used as an easy target by a minority of individuals intent on squeezing out as much negativity as possible from what is a buoyant and developing leisure landscape.

"We will not be distracted and it is our intention to continue to do our utmost to support the youth of the Derbyshire Dales. The council has had a comprehensive leisure strategy since 1993 that develops and runs swimming pools, sports centres, parks and recreation grounds, as well as sports development.

"The council is adept at attracting lottery funds and working with partners and in the past 15 years we have built three substantial leisure facilities and another is on the way. Only four years ago we rebuilt Matlock's parks to include a brilliant skate park facility.

"While the temporary closure of the main pool at Matlock Lido is disappointing and frustrating, we will bounce back, not least with a new central leisure facility that will be a significant development not just for the Derbyshire Dales, but for the region as a whole."

The council says a total of 4,003,076 visits from 2001 to the end of March this year equates to well over half a million visits a year over the last seven years.

There were almost 600 visits to the district council's summer holiday sports programme, with centres in each of the Dales' four major towns.

Lone Starr,

Is there any mention about attempting to re-open the Lido until such time as the new leisure centre opens?

Matlock really needs some sports facilities NOW, and the least the council should do is to re-open the Lido as quickly as possible.

Sadly, I hung up my elbow and knee pads a few years ago, so I can't make use of the skateboard park.

I don't trust the timescales on the new leisure centre. In any case, we shouldn't be made to wait YEARS for a new facility. We shouldn't even have to wait months for the Lido to re-open. Why hasn't work started already? It's been closed for a long while already, and all we hear is waffle. Can't they just get on with it?

Where has Lone Starr seen any statement from the District Council that it does NOT intend to reopen the Lido?

Don't rely on the Mercury hype - go to the Derbyshire Dales Web Site - read the full Report presented to the meeting on 25th September and the minutes of that Meeting.

I don't brush aside the failure to spot the problem earlier but I do think criticism should be constructive.

Lone Starr you wasting your talent whatever your job is - please let me know the winning lottery numbers for this weekend. You could make a fortune!

The problem is we just can't trust the council with leisure facilities in Matlock - you only have to look back to the Sherwood Hall fiasco to see why. People are clearly going to be annoyed that Matlock has no leisure facilities currently. The new leisure centre has been talked about since I was a kid. It took nearly 30 years for Sainsbury and the relief road to arrive. What guarantees do we have that the new leisure centre is going to be any quicker. Don't forget when Sherwood Hall was closed we were told the new leisure centre would open in 2010!

Also look at the fiasco of the extension to Ashbourne's pool. The project over-ran, went 'bust' 3 times (at one point pool users were being encouraged by DDDC to 'buy-a-brick' for £1) and it still didn't deliver the improved changing facilities for the pool users. Oh, but it did deliver (yet another) skate park.

Cllr Rose may hit back and say 'We will not be distracted and it is our intention to continue to do our utmost to support the youth of the Derbyshire Dales'. Wake up Cllr; it's not the youth who are complaining and it's not the youth who vote!

Out of interest, the Government recently pledged that to mark the Olympics ALL swimming would be free. Unfortunately, people need a pool first.

The council has not said it will close it or keep it open but they only have the two choices. If they are going to keep it open then they should just get on with it.

If that is not the case then the only other option is closure which is exactly what the Mercury and its readers are pointing out.

They are insisting on doing the consultation because they reckon they are damned if they do and damned if they don't (as with Sherwood Hall) what they don't seem to understand is that we don't mind them getting on with it without asking if it is in our interests.

We voted for the councillors so they could represent us and keep an eye on the officers whose wages we pay with our taxes. They are our servants and should be doing as we request.

I have heard recently that they are now planning to close the loos in the centre of Matlock. What on earth do we pay our taxes for if it isn't for the privilege of having public facilities such as loos, sports centres and swimming pools?

These days far too much money seems to go on officers for this and officers for that. Get rid of a few of these highly paid people who are pushing paper around and we could keep the loos open as well as the pool.

I am sure I read in a Sunday paper that some chief execs are paid over £100,000. How ridiculous is that? Does anyone know how much we pay ours to make these decisions in Matlock?
