Awards success for sporty Dales students

DALES students picked up accolades and recognition at the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association (DSSA) awards night in Derby last week.
Team of the Year was the Derbyshire U17 Girls County Hockey Team, which has won the Midlands U17 Championships and the National U17 Championships.
Players include Alison Milyard, Mae Wilson and Chloe Maynard from Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth, and Katie Jones, Rebecca Bowman and Sophie Hawkins from Lady Manners School in Bakewell.
Highly commended in the Sportsperson of the Year were Wushu champion Sam Mak from Highfields School in Matlock, who also gave a demonstration of the martial art, and wheelchair basketball player Madeleine Thompson from Lady Manners.
Highly commended in the Student Volunteer of the Year category was Lindsey Pearson from Highfields, Fran Perry from Anthony Gell, as well as adult volunteer Harry Butler, also from Anthony Gell.
There were also individual performance awards for Matlock runner Josh Moody and Wirksworth wrestlers Ben Bellamy and Jack Lawley.
The evening also saw John Bainbridge Award Grants of £50 each presented to some of the county’s most promising young sports stars including swimmer Frances Anderson (Lady Manners), wrestler Jack Lawley (Anthony Gell), Madeleine Thompson and Matlock Cycling Club’s John Lomas.
l HIGHFIELDS sports ambassadors Gina Camfield and Sam Mak met Olympics heroes including Beijing cycling gold medallist Rebecca Romero at a special event for student sportspeople at Derby County’s Pride Park stadium, while Scott Benson and Lindsey Pearson met 1996 Atlanta Games silver medallist Iwan Thomas at the East Midlands Sports Awards night, also held at Pride Park, where they were recognised for their volunteer work with Dales sports clubs.
