Despite having no pool and numerous injuries and absentees, Matlock continue to persevere in a season already ravaged by disappointment and misfortune.
Jim Evans, who has recently taken on the responsibility of organising the remaining fixtures, was optimistic when questioned in a rare inside caravan interview earlier this week.
"We could play South Derbyshire this weekend. We are playing Bingh
am on Monday.
“Despite our pool problems, it is ironic that we could in fact honour all our fixtures for the first time in years.
“It would be a wonderful testament to the players if we did."
Jim's dedication to the cause added to speculation on Sunday that the mobile home parked in the Red Lion rear car park was in fact his with him in it at that time.
"How close I am to the action is my business. It is for other people to guess," rebuked Evans with a defensiveness suggesting that the rumours had some factual foundation.
Ashbourne was once again the training venue last weekend in a session very well attended by club members.
This Sunday sees the same pool hosting the club's training in a gesture that is greatly appreciated by players and officials alike.
With young Stan Beeson seen working on his eggbeater technique and team communication skills during the session, wealthy club chairman Dave Frost angrily refuted claims that the young man was being prepared for the Bingham game.
"I believe in youth and yes, we do need players.
“But I do not believe in rapid introductions into the senior team when the player is not yet ready. I like them to grow to be a bigger size than the ball first."
At the time of going to press, Stan's mother would not allow him to comment. For more club news, please log on to www.matlockwaterpoloclub. btik. com
